Quando Negro Confessional: Escape The Fate

ESCAPE THE FATE não percorreu exatamente as mais suaves estradas desde sua formação em 2004, mas apesar disso, eles combateram as probabilidades e voltaram ao topo, de novo e de novo. Seu álbum mais recente, This War Is Ours de 2008, incorporou vários elementos ao tentar passar por cima de seu passado, contudo é apenas o passado recente que a banda post-hardcore de Las Vegas deseja superar. Me lembro de ser bem novo e ouvir bastante Alanis [Morisette] e Sheryl Crow, também. Daí eu entrei na música clássica, como Bethoven.

Como foi isso, sobre essas bandas que você gostava?

GREEN: Quando eu era mais novo, tive uma educação bem difícil. Eu não tive uma família comum ou uma vida familiar. Éramos só eu e minha mãe. Meus pais se separaram quando eu era bem novo e minha mãe se casou novamente, e então se separou desse cara quando eu estava no ensino fundamental. A música era uma coisa importante pra mim. Meu rádio era meu melhor amigo. Eu me conectei muito com Marily Manson, ele foi minha maior influência, com certeza. Várias ideias que eu tive pra banda vieram dele. Eu amo como ele se impõe como um singular e faz seu próprio trabalho e caminho. Eu também costumava ouvir um bocado de piadas por ouvir Mötley Crüe. Parece que as coisas deram uma guinada agora, aonde eles são legais de novo. É engraçado.

MABBITT: Eu ouvi uma variedade de músicas diferentes. Gostava das canções. Nunca estava muito infiltrado num só tipo de coisa. Eu gostava de boa música.

Você lembra de alguma das suas primeiras memórias sobre música?

GREEN: O primeiro show que eu assisti foi do U2. Foi quando eu estava, tipo, na quinta ou sexta série. Meu professor de teatro levou a mim e um bando de garotos até o show. Foi insano, digo, eu conhecia umas duas músicas do U2 naquela época, mas não era um grande fã. Eu gostei mesmo de “Sunday Bloody Sunday” [do álbum War de 1983] e “Mysterious Ways” [do álbum Achtung Baby de 1991]. MABBITT: A única coisa que eu consigo pensar é na orquestra da quinta série, quando eu estava aprendendo a tocar violino e o nosso professor colocou um vídeo de uma orquestra profissional, como a Orquestra Filarmônica de Londres ou algo assim. MABBITT: O primeiro show que eu tive mesmo que ir foi Linkin Park, Cypress Hill, Mudvayne, Hoobastank e Adema. Eu estava tão eufórico. Cheguei mais cedo e gastei uns 50 dólares numa camiseta e consegui ficar na frente da fila. Me lembro de cantar junto quando Linkin Park tocou “My December.” [O vocalista Chester Bennington] olhou pra onde eu estava, foi um momento incrível. Isso teve um tamanho impacto em mim, e imediatamente eu quis ser capaz de impactar as pessoas dessa maneira. Nunca tinha ouvido música ao vivo antes, mas fui pra casa sabendo que era o que eu queria fazer com a minha vida. Sendo agora um vocalista, eu olho em volta todo o tempo pras pessoas cantando comigo. Quero que elas tenham esse momento também.

Seus pais tiveram alguma influência no que você ouvia?

GREEN: Minha mãe sempre foi muito legal e aberta. Me lembro quando eu era uma criança, ela ligava o rádio no apartamento ou aonde quer que nós estivéssemos e dançava na sala de estar. Ela ouvia um monte de hip hop old-school, como Salt-n-Pepa. Nós sempre curtimos isso. Ela sempre me deixou ouvir o que eu tivesse vontade. Sempre deu muito apoio, especialmente com a música. Ela também me ajudou a comprar minha primeira guitarra.

MABBITT: Meu pai tinha uma coleção de CDs na qual eu fiquei viciado. Foi como achei Journey e R.E.M e bandas desse tipo. Daí eu mudei pra bandas modernas, como The Used. Sempre quis fazer música sozinho depois disso, então comecei tocando em bandas e ouvindo basicamente tudo que me passavam.

Que tipo de bandas você começou a ouvir durante o colegial?

GREEN: Fui um desses garotos que só ouvia um montão de Marilyn Manson. Era obcecado por ele. Ainda sou. Também ouvi bastante Nine Inch Nails e Blink-182. Blink foi na verdade, tipo, o segundo show que eu fui e o primeiro que comprei meu próprio ingresso. Foi Blink-182, Bad Religion e Fenix TX.     ESCAPE THE FATE not followed exactly the smoothest roads since its formation in 2004, but despite this, they battled the odds and returned to the top, again and again. His most recent album, This War Is Ours 2008, incorporated several elements to try to go over your past, yet it is only the recent past that the post-hardcore band from Las Vegas wants to overcome. Early musical influences them - some of which you expect and others that will surprise you - they are a good part of what makes the band who they are. We talked with lead singer Craig Mabbitt bassist Max Green about how music has inspired their lives and their livelihoods.

    If you made a tape with memories of his childhood, which bands would play in it?

    MAX GREEN: Probably a little LL Cool J, like that song "Mama Said Knock You Out" I heard a lot of Smashing Pumpkins, Motley Crue, too.

    Craig Mabbitt: Would Journey, Aerosmith, Backstreet Boys, Color Me Badd and Sublime. Looking back ... I heard a lot of Power 92, which was a station of hip hop and R & B of Arizona. I remember being really young and quite hear Alanis [Morissette] and Sheryl Crow, too. Then I got into classical music such as Beethoven.

    How was it, about these bands that you liked?

    GREEN: When I was younger, I had an education very difficult. I have not had a joint family or a family life. It was just me and my mom. My parents separated when I was young and my mother remarried, and then broke that guy when I was in elementary school.My radio was my best friend. I connected a lot with Marilyn Manson, he was my biggest influence, for sure. I had several ideas for the band came from him. I love how he stands as a singular work and make your own way. I used to hear a lot of jokes to hear Motley Crue. It seems that things took a turn now, where they are legal again. It's funny.

    Mabbitt: I heard a variety of different songs. I liked the songs. Never was much infiltrated a single type of thing. I like good music.

    You remember some of his earliest memories of music?

    GREEN: The first concert ever was U2. That was when I was, like, fifth or sixth grade. My drama teacher took me and a bunch of kids to the show. It was insane, I mean, I knew a couple U2 songs at the time, but it was not a big fan. I really enjoyed "Sunday Bloody Sunday" [the album War of 1983] and "Mysterious Ways" [of the Achtung Baby album in 1991]. [Robert Ortiz, drums] showed me an article the other day that said they made the greatest show ever, and they had that huge stadium that had fallen down and people for that sort of thing. It's so crazy. They are probably the greatest band of our time.

    Mabbitt: The only thing I can think is in the orchestra in fifth grade when I was learning to play violin and our teacher put a video of a professional orchestra like the Philharmonic Orchestra of London or something. They are my first memories of watching music. I played piano in fifth grade and then went pro saxophone, and then went pro and coral started to want to become a singer after that.

    Have you ever had one of those moments where you think, "That's definitely what I want to do?

    Mabbitt: The first show I've even had to go was Linkin Park, Cypress Hill, Mudvayne, Hoobastank and Adema. I was so euphoric. I arrived early and spent about $ 50 a shirt and I could stand in front of the queue. I remember singing along when Linkin Park performed "My December." [The lead singer Chester Bennington] looked at where I was, was an incredible moment. This had an impact on me size, and immediately I wanted to be able to impact people that way. I had never heard live music before, but went home knowing that was what I wanted to do with my life. Now a singer, I look around at people all the time singing with me. I want them to have this time too.

    His parents had some influence in what you heard?

    GREEN: My mother was always very nice and open. I remember when I was a child, she turned on the radio in the apartment or wherever we were and danced in the living room. She heard a lot of old-school hip hop, like Salt-n-Pepa. We always enjoy it. She always let me hear what I wanted to do. Always very supportive, especially with music. She also helped me buy my first guitar.

    Mabbitt: My father had a collection of CDs which I got addicted. It was like I thought Journey, REM and bands like that. Then I moved to modern bands like The Used. Ever wanted to make music alone after that, so I started playing in bands and listening to basically all I passed.

    What kind of bands you started listening during high school?

    GREEN: I was one of those kids who just listened to a lot of Marilyn Manson. He was obsessed with him. Still am. I also heard a lot of Nine Inch Nails and Blink-182. Blink was actually, like, the second concert I went first and I bought my own ticket. Was Blink-182, Bad Religion and Fenix ​​TX. It's crazy that I went to see Bad Religion in school and now, years later, we're signed to Epitaph, which is their guitarist Brett [Gurewitz].

Meu nome é Craig, e eu sou o vocalista do Escape The Fate.

Durante o último verão saiu à notícia de que vocês foram contratados pela DGC/Interscope Records para o lançamento do seu novo álbum. Como tem sido o relacionamento da banda com a nova casa?

Tem sido bem bacana cara. Tem tantas pessoas diferentes trabalhando lá, então acaba sendo meio que dividido, uma pessoa trabalha com a banda A e outra com a banda B, acaba formando equipes. Eu realmente gosto da nova gravadora. Eu amo de verdade todos que trabalham lá.

A Epitaph com certeza é uma das maiores gravadoras independentes, mesmo assim, há alguma diferença entre como as coisas aconteciam na Epitaph e acontecem hoje na Interscope?

Com certeza. O ritmo é bem mais intenso. Falo com pessoas da gravadora todos os dias agora. Eles me ligam, mesmo que seja só pra ver como estou mesmo. Eles sempre ligam para ver se podemos fazer tal coisa ou pensar em novas idéias para divulgarem a banda. Acho que agora realmente sinto como se isso fosse o meu emprego.

A banda lançou seu álbum auto-intitulado no começo de Novembro. Como foi a reação dos fãs durante esses últimos meses?

Tem sido muito bom. Nós acabamos de voltar de Londres ontem na verdade. Fizemos dois shows lá e tocamos provavelmente o maior set ao vivo da nossa carreira, acho que foram 16 músicas. Mais da metade das músicas foram do novo álbum e a reação do público foi incrível. Estou muito animado com a nossa próxima turnê pelos EUA.

Vocês ficaram nervosos por tocarem essas músicas pela primeira vez ao vivo?

Sim, no começo a gente fico meio nervoso, mas tudo acabou dando muito certo. Ficamos até surpresos.

Como foi trabalhar com o Don Gilmore no estúdio?

Ele é um cara bem tranqüilo, um produtor que não fica impondo muito as coisas, mas que ao mesmo tempo mantêm controle da situação. Ele acaba dando sua opinião aqui e ali, mas ele acaba deixando você decidir no final das contas como as coisas devem ser. Gostei bastante de trabalhar com ele porque eu acabei sentindo que consegui expandir mais os horizontes da banda, artisticamente falando.

Houve alguma diferença grande entre o processo de criação desse disco em relação aos outros?

Sim, com certeza.  Trabalhamos muito mais tempo nesse último CD. O que a gente fez antes foi meio que, ‘hey, vamos lá e gravar logo’ e acabamos gravando tudo em dois meses, e surpreendentemente ficou muito, muito bom. Dessa vez todos nós sentimos muito mais preparados para gravar também.

As coisas fluíram de uma maneira mais natural?

Sim, tudo foi muito super natural. Entramos pra gravar com tudo já definido. Foi tudo uma questão de entrar e gravar profissionalmente.  E sobrou um monte de coisa pra falar a verdade.

Dessas sessões de gravação?

Sim, temos ainda muitas músicas que não foram usadas. E agora estamos pensando no que fazer com elas.

A banda recentemente teve que abandonar a sua turnê pela Europa graças ao fato do baixista, Max Green, ter se internado num centro de reabilitação. Foi tudo muito rápido e isso aconteceu logo após o lançamento do disco. Quão difícil foi lidar com essa situação? E como os fãs reagiram?

Os fãs nos apoiaram muito, e eu acho que isso acabou sendo muito positivo pra ele durante o tempo de reabilitação e tudo mais. Nós tentamos ajudar ele o máximo possível. Mas com certeza foi uma situação chata para nós e para os fãs que assim como a gente queriam muito aqueles shows. Ia ser uma turnê gigante pela Europa para nós, e é uma pena ter perdido isso. Mas os caras do Bullet e os fãs compreenderam a situação toda. A banda está muito mais saudável hoje. Se o Max não tivesse ido buscar ajuda naquela época a coisa ia só piorar, porque ele estava começando a ficar muito, muito mal. Ele precisava de ajuda o mais rápido possível.

Ele tocou com vocês nesses shows em Londres?

Sim, foram os primeiros shows desde que a gente parou por causa da internação dele. Os shows foram muito, muito bons.

Daqui alguns dias o Escape The Fate vai cair na estrada na turnê The Dead Masquerade durante três meses. Quais as suas expectativas para essa turnê?

Cara, não tenho palavras pra descrever. Não tem nada melhor do que realizar uma turnê no seu país natal. Você não sai na rua tendo que procurar um lugar onde a comida que eles servem não se parece com a língua boi. Sempre tem um Taco Bell na esquina, e eu sou um grande fã de Taco Bell. Não tem nada melhor do que turnê pelos EUA. Eu sou amigo de boa parte das bandas que estarão com a gente nessa turnê. Só não conheço uma das bandas, mas acho que vamos nos dar bem. Não vejo a hora de tocar as músicas novas. Também estou feliz com a forma que o palco vai ser montado. Estou entusiasmado com a idéia das pessoas vendo a gente ao vivo.

O setlist vai ser semelhante aos dos shows em Londres?

Sim, eles vão ser muito parecidos.

Vocês ficam nervosos com o fato de estar na estrada por tanto tempo?

Nós somos o tipo de banda, e eu não gosto de falar isso porque é um pouco ridículo, mas, nós ensaiamos pouco tempo, e eu acho que a gente realmente precisa começar a fazer isso mais. [Risos]. No começo de uma turnê a gente sempre fica com um pé atrás, o primeiro show é sempre o pior, depois o segundo já melhora, e no terceiro show já estamos com todo o pique do mundo. Eu acho que a vida na estrada é uma coisa boa para a banda. Estou animado com o fato de ficar tanto tempo fazendo shows.

Pra preparar os fãs para a turnê vocês lançaram um EP com remixes e a música ‘Issues’ foi a primeira a ser disponibilizada on-line. Como foi todo esse processo? E o que você achou do resultado final desse EP?

Estou bem feliz com a maneira como tudo ficou, com certeza ele cumpriu o que tinha que fazer. Eu vi alguns comentários no iTunes de pessoas falando que nunca tinham escutado a gente e foram conferir o som porque conheciam o DJ que fez o remix. Acho que essa era a nossa intenção mesmo ao lançar ele. Eu gostei das músicas, na época que a gente tava com a idéia eu tava escutando direto dubstep, e resolvemos ir atrás dos remixes. E a gravadora meio que virou e falou, “porque vocês não montam um EP e lançam para os fãs?”. E a gente acabou fazendo isso, as pessoas que curtem esse tipo de música realmente gostaram, alguns outros que não tem a mínima noção acharam que a gente virou uma banda eletrônica. Não entenderam que era apenas um EP de remixes. Eles acham que é um projeto novo e que somos uma banda eletrônica.

Bom, depois dessa turnê acho que vocês vão querer descansar né? Quando vocês estão pensando em fazer a turnê pela Europa para compensar por essa última que foi cancelada?

Bom, a turnê nos EUA vai até Março e depois vamos estender ela, talvez com as mesmas bandas até, se estiverem disponíveis, e depois disso vamos para a Austrália e Japão. Depois disso vamos tocar em alguns festivais no Reino Unido, e ai sim iremos fazer a turnê pela Europa e Reino Unido. Acho que vamos continuar com o mesmo nome e tudo mais. Vai ser uma turnê mundial.

Então vocês vão até o verão com isso?

Sim, com certeza.

Estão animados com a idéia de um semestre cheio de shows?

Sim, vai ser muito bom tudo isso. Eu sempre gosto daquelas camisetas que a gente vende com as datas de todas os shows nas costas. Os fãs também amam essas camisetas. Sempre quis uma escrito “turnê mundial” com todas as datas e lugares diferentes escritos. To bem animado sim.

Como você disse anteriormente, vocês tem muitas músicas ainda. Você acredita que um novo EP durante o verão é possível?

Sim, é claro. Nós já estamos inclusive falando com a gravadora sobre como vamos lançar o novo material. Você vê esses artistas de hip hop e rap e eles lançam discos aqui e ali, mas toda hora eles estão lançando uma música nova para manter a atenção dos fãs, atendendo ao que eles querem. Estamos tentando descobrir como uma banda de rock pode fazer isso.

Pra terminar, o ex-vocalista da banda, Ronnie Radke, fez uma entrevista com a Alternative Press em Dezembro, logo que saiu da prisão, tenho certeza que você já viu ela. Ele falou várias coisas sobre a banda e você durante aquela entrevista. E fãs da banda acabaram se dividindo em relação ao que foi dito. Vocês escutaram muita coisa ruim por causa dessa entrevista?

Nós lidamos com isso três anos atrás. Hoje em dia nem damos mais atenção a isso. Realmente, não nos importamos mais com esse tipo de coisa. As vezes os nossos fãs acabam entrando muito nisso e vem falar comigo, e eu sempre falo que estamos bem e que ninguém deve se preocupar com isso. Ele obviamente tem muita coisa pra falar pra conseguir a sua paz. Então que fale e siga em frente. Acho que é isso que tem que acontecer.

A água já passou debaixo dessa ponte então, independente de quantas vezes ele falar diretamente sobre você?

Sim, eu nem me incomodo mais. Não vou me rebaixar a nenhum nível. Todos os caras e eu estamos num plano muito maior e estamos felizes. Até responder algo desse tipo acaba te rebaixando. Crescemos e estamos mais maduros hoje, então pode-se dizer que a água passou mesmo por essa ponte.

Just for the record, you can speak your name and what makes the Escape The Fate?

    My name is Craig, and I am the lead singer of Escape The Fate.

    During last summer came the news that you were hired by the DGC / Interscope Records to release his new album. As has been the band's relationship with the new house?

    It's been really nice guy. There are so many different people working there, so it ends up being kind of divided, a person working with the band and the other with the B band, eventually forming teams. I really like the new label. I really love everyone who works there.

    The Epitaph is surely one of the largest independent labels, anyway, is there any difference between how things happened on Epitaph and Interscope in place today?

    Absolutely. The pace is much more intense. I talk to record company people every day now. They call me, if only to see how I am. They always call in to see if we could do or think up new ideas to publicize the band. I guess now I really feel like it's my job.

    The band released their self-titled album in early November. How was the reaction from fans over these past months?

    It has been very good. We just returned from London yesterday actually. We did two shows there and we played probably the greatest set live in our career, I think there were 16 songs. More than half of the songs were from the new album and the audience reaction was incredible. I am very excited about our upcoming U.S. tour.

    Were you nervous about playing these songs live for the first time?

    Yes, at first we get a little nervous, but everything ended up working too well. We were so surprised.

    How was working with Don Gilmore on the set?

    He is a very quiet guy, a producer who is not very imposing things, but at the same time maintain control of the situation. He ends up giving your opinion here and there, but he ends up leaving you ultimately decide how things should be. I really liked working with him because I just felt I could expand the horizons of the band, artistically speaking.

    Was there a big difference between the process of creating this album compared to others?

    Yes, absolutely. We work much longer in this latest CD. What we did before was like, 'hey, come on and write soon' and we ended up recording everything in two months, and surprisingly it was very, very good. This time we all feel much more prepared to write well.

    Things flowed from a more natural way?

    Yes, everything is very super natural. We got to record with everything already defined. It was all a matter of getting in and write professionally. And a lot of things left to tell the truth.

    These recording sessions?

    Yes, we have many songs that were not used. And now we're wondering what to do with them.

    The band recently had to abandon their European tour due to the fact that bassist Max Green, have been admitted to a rehabilitation center. It all happened very fast and it happened right after the album release. How difficult was dealing with this situation? And how the fans react?

    The fans supported us a lot, and I think it ended up being very positive for him during the rehabilitation time and everything. We try to help him as much as possible. But he was certainly an annoying situation for us and the fans that just as we wanted a lot of those shows. Would be a giant tour through Europe for us, and it's unfortunate to have lost it. But the guys at Bullet and the fans understood the whole situation. The band is much healthier today. If Max had not gone to seek help at the time the thing would only make matters worse, because he was starting to get very, very bad. He needed help as quickly as possible.

    He played those shows with you in London?

    Yes, were the first shows since we stopped because of his hospitalization. The shows were very, very good.

    In a few days the Escape The Fate will hit the road on tour The Dead Masquerade for three months. What are your expectations for this tour?

    Dude, I have no words to describe. There's nothing better than a tour in his homeland. You do not play in the street having to find a place where the food they serve is not like the ox tongue. Always have a Taco Bell on the corner, and I'm a big fan of Taco Bell. There's nothing better than U.S. tour. I'm friends with most of the bands that will be with us on this tour. Only one of the bands do not know, but I think we'll get along. Can not wait to play the new songs. I am also happy with the way that the stage will be assembled. I am thrilled with the idea of ​​people seeing us live.

    The setlist will be similar to the shows in London?

    Yes, they will be very similar.

    Do you get nervous about being on the road for so long?

    We're the kind of band, and I do not like to talk about it because it's a little ridiculous, but we practiced a short time, and I think we really need to start doing it more.     To prepare fans for the tour you released an EP of remixes and the song 'Issues' was the first to be available online. How did this whole process? And what did you think of the final outcome of the EP?

    I'm pretty happy with how everything went, he certainly has done what had to. I saw some comments in iTunes saying that people had never heard us and were checking the sound because they knew the DJ who did the remix. I think that was our intention to even launch it. I liked the music at the time that we were with the idea I was listening to straight dubstep, and decided to go behind the remixes. And the record half-turned and said, "because you do not assemble and release an EP for the fans?". And we ended up doing it, people who enjoy this kind of music really liked it, some others do not have the slightest idea that we thought turned into an electronic band. They did not understand that it was just an EP of remixes. They think it's a new project and we are an electronic band.

    Well, after this tour I think you'll want to rest right? When you are thinking of doing a European tour to make up for this last one that was canceled?

    Well, the U.S. tour runs until March and then we extend it, perhaps even with the same bands, if available, and after that we go to Australia and Japan after that we'll play a few festivals in the UK, and oh yes We will make the tour of Europe and the UK. I think we'll continue with the same name and everything. It will be a world tour.

    So you go to summer with this?

    Yes, absolutely.

    Are excited with the idea of ​​a half-filled lives?

    Yes, it will be very good all this. I always like those shirts that we sell with the dates of all the shows back. Fans also love these shirts. Always wanted a written "world tour" with all the dates and places written. I'm really excited yes.

    As you said earlier, you have many songs yet. Do you believe that a new EP during the summer is possible?

    Yes, of course. We are already talking about even with the record about how we release the new material. You see these hip hop and rap and they throw discs here and there, but every time they are launching a new music to keep fans' attention, with what they want. We're trying to figure out how a rock band can do that.

    To finish, the former lead singer, Ronnie Radke, did an interview with Alternative Press in December, once out of prison, I'm sure you've seen it. He talked a lot about the band and you during this interview. And fans of the band ended up splitting over what was said. You have heard lots of bad stuff because of this interview?

    We deal with it three years ago. These days they give more attention to it. Really, do not care anymore with this kind of thing. Sometimes our fans end up getting much of it and come talk to me, and I always say we're well and that nobody should worry about it. He obviously has a lot to get to speak their peace. So they talk and move on. I think that's what has to happen.

    Yes, I do not even bother anymore. I will not condescend to any level. All the guys and I are on a much larger and we are happy. Until something like that answer you just look down. We grow and today we are more mature, then we can say that the water passed through this same bridge.
